A downloadable game for Windows

Good Day Adventurer,

here you will find a short playable prototype (~5-10 minutes) of the game idea called Saligia. Using a controller is highly recommended.

  • Quest through a simple questline and learn more about the corrupted region named Gula
  • Fight different types of corrupted fantasy creatures and a mutated Boss who likes to eat ;)
  • Choose your spell loadout from 4 different spells and a pair of runes to further customize your spell effects
  • Equip the scythe for melee combat or use the grimoire for range combat to adapt your playstyle

Please note that not every input method is supported/ works properly. We highly recommend playing with an Xbox controller, since it was developed with an Xbox controller in mind.

Controller TypeWorks wirelessWorks wired (USB)

Playstation Dualshocknoyes
Switch Proyesyes
Steam Controllernono
Generic Gamepadyesyes
Keyboard & Mouseyesyes

If your controller is not working properly, be sure to close steam if you have linked any custom controller layouts via steam. Keyboard and Mouse are working but have a weird layout (turning the camera on Y,X (german layout)) because it was used just for debugging reasons. Therefore we highly recommend using a controller!

We would love to read your comments if you enjoyed playing (and if there's any other feedback too of course).

We are a small indie dev studio based in Germany. This short playable is a result of the prototype funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

Hi,

I streamed your game (and a part of queenfaith's video 😂) last night. Overall...*drum roll*...You're the first non-RPG Maker game that has been produced for free and by a small dev team that I really enjoyed! Though I am aware programming in Unity is much more difficult than RPG Maker, Unity fortunately offers far more diverse game experiences. However, often the results I have found on my streams is that many Unity developers probably would have been better off with a simplified, more focused game engine as the games I played were buggy, filled with jank, and sometimes unplayable. So this is a momentous moment: the day I finally found a small Unity project that isn't filled with bugs and jank.

Onto the review proper:

The art direction, customization, and small (but focused) level design really brings a lot of charm to the game that I enjoyed the most. The dynamic between the tome and the scythe is also quite fun. I found it strange, but somewhat quirky that the player character doesn't seem to have a voice at all, and all of the talking is done by your weapons.

Where I would say the game lacks is in the sound design, feedback, and accessibility. Sound design sounds fairly generic and basic with mediocre mixing and sounds that seem to cut off a bit too early.

When you health is low, there is little indication given to the player that their health is low other than the health bar, but in the heat of combat sometimes it is difficult to focus on HUD elements. Giving either sound cues, visual cues, or both would go a long way in making sure players don't accidentally die because they weren't watching their health bar enough. Always have redundancies in your design.

Likewise, the dodge mechanic is satisfying to pull off, but the only time I really felt confident and cheeky about my dodges was when the attacks were predictable and foreseeable with slow moving projectiles. Melee enemies don't telegraph their attacks enough to make dodging a well thought out strategy for the player, instead mostly boiling down to dodging "when it feels right". One thing I didn't bring up in the stream but I should have is that it does seem like the dodge cancels animation, which is what makes it feel so satisfying to execute and really makes it feel like the player has a lot of control. This is likely why I started thinking of Bayonetta/DmC while I was playing, and I think it would make the game way more thrilling to pivot the combat is a more fast-paced direction by taking some notes from those games.

This is long enough, so let's just end on accessibility: It sucks there is no option to (at the very least) invert the X-axis camera controls on the camera. On controller I always use inverted X, so during my play through of your game, it was a real struggle for me to control the camera without inverted X.

If you'd like to watch my experience with your game, I've linked the archive below. You can click the timestamps to jump to when I start playing your game.

Hi Nolan,

Yes, we like to engage with people (even as Unity Devs ;) ).

Thank you so much for playing/testing Saligia  (our hearts broke when you typed Saliva in your stream btw) ! Your feedback is fantastic and very valuable.

As you mentioned in your stream, the quality this type of game needs to match our own standards, and the standards of players are pretty high (as any other A-RPG also experiences). So chances are Saligia will not be our first commercial title released, since we would need more people than 2 programmers and 1 game designer to make it to the finish line. That said, it's not canceled more kind of locked away as a project we would love to tackle in the future.

Jumping to the voices - Yes, we used AI-generated Text-to-speech for the prototype (it is not beta. not even alpha). Using Replica Studio (as one of the comments on YouTube mentioned) enabled us to bring some voice "acting" to a prototype and be budget-friendly at the same time.

Again, thanks for playing and our team really looks forward to uploading another prototype/playtest on itch (whenever that will be). We hope you'll test more games from us and give more valuable feedback! Do not stop your important work!

Cheers,
Dennis from Suspicious Games

Sorry about the name I typed in on the Stream. It's been a bit of a joke that I always forget to change the title of the current game I'm playing, so the fact that I finally remembered to do it, I decided to make it into a joke. But, I see your point, and I realize that if I happen to remember to change the name, it is not the place to make jokes. Thank you for the feedback 😊

And yes! Please keep in touch, I'd be happy to stream and review more of you're games. There are some places that you can contact me listed in the videos description or in the About section on my YouTube channel. Feel free to save them for future reference.

nice prototype rpg

thank you!
Nice playthrough! Did you make it to the boss at the end? The video ends before you found the second forest entrance (you nearly found it though!).

Also: We hope the actual gameplay was smoother than the framerate of the attached youtube vid you provided? :O
